Programming for children of color (esp. girls)..

Quick question.. Are there any DVDs or shows that anyone would recommend for children of color? A friend of mine has a 4 yr old and wants their child to see black children in shows and movies where they aren't the sidekick or the dumbdumb. We already thought of Little Bill and stopped.. Can anyone think of any more?

... "The Proud Family" is out of the question. The bullies are blue/black and have the most ethnic feature and just happen to be dumb and evil...

Damn! I was gonna say "Proud Family" until I finished reading your post...I don't know of too many more shows, but i can recommend the following that I've watched with the kids:

Kirikou: a good animated movie, in a West African setting
Dora the Explorer
Diego
Lil Bill
Backyardigans
Gora Gora Island - PBS

I think somebody should make backpacks, lunch boxes, bedsheets, towels, etc. that reflect Black people or people of color. First my complaint was that there were too many Barbie/Superman/Bratz/Cinderella items in the store, but then I realized, where are the Black characters to even make these merchandise items after??
