The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 on a case that is probably going to have a huge affect on affirmative action. Why? The Court has ruled against diversifying using race in public schools. This decision mostly affected public schools in Kentucky and Seattle, but this doesn't mean other districts across the country will not be next. So, has this decision, supported by Justices Scalia, Thomas, Alito, Roberts and Kennedy, overturned the groundbreaking Brown vs. Board of Ed? Maybe not. Chief Justice Roberts explains: "..to stop discriminating on a basis of race is to stop discriminating on a basis of race." In other words, students are getting into these schools based on race keeping others out for the same reason. If we want equality and true diversity, then stop discrimination all around. My question is will this work? It is because of affirmative action that many minorities have been accepted into many of these public and private schools. It wasn't always because their grades were stellar or because they knew the right people. Public schools in many areas are becoming more and more resegregated. This vote by the Court, in my opinion, is allowing schools to take a step back into time. Remember Little Rock? I'm not sure that these justices really thought about what they are doing. I mean, it sounds good in concept, but how will it work in execution? Will my nephew be able to get into Pennington or Grimes Elementary Schools if this reaches New York? What if his grades are wonderful and he has shown that he is made for such a "prestigious" school? Will he not get in because he's from the south side? Because he is a minority? I'm not sure. How will this affect college admissions? Without a quota to meet, who's to say that the deserving but underpriveledged student will be accepted. I don't know ya'll. It worries me. These Justices are banking on the HOPE and PRAYER that society has really progressed over the last 50 years and no longer needs a law forcing them to desegregate. I'm sorry, but I don't think we've come that far. I guess we'll see what happens, yes?
